Year 6
Stations of the Cross
As part of our Desert to Garden topic, we have been following the journey of Jesus through Holy Week. We have finished our topic on reflecting on Jesus’ sacrifice by creating our own version of Stations of the Cross. With a partner, we came up with our own reflection and prayer linked to our station. It was a lovely time of prayer and contemplation.
Clay Pots
Year 6 used the different clay techniques they had learnt to create their own pot in the style of Ancient Greek pottery. They warmed the clay up and used either slabbing or coiling to create a pot. They then used different tools to add decorations and some added handles.
Life in Sparta
Year 6 had a great afternoon with their Ancient Greek visitor. We learnt about life in Ancient Sparta and what it would have been like growing up there. Boys and girls from the age of 7 had to learn to fight! We got to handle weapons and dress up in armour. Finally, we got to use bows and arrows to try and defeat monsters of the underworld and save the souls of the lost soldiers – it was great fun!
Jesus' Trial
Year 6 have continued their journey through Holy Week by reading about the trial of Jesus in John’s Gospel. We had to decide whether the trial was fair or not and we created a poster about it with our partner.
Science Fun
To celebrate British Science Week, we had some visitors from St Paul’s come in to school to celebrate curiosity in Science. We had to try and build a circuit, test our reaction speed and build a molecule model. We had lots of fun!
World Book Day
Year 6 had a great time celebrating World Book Day! We had some time with our Reading Buddies, making chairs for the bears from Golidlocks and the Three Bears and we started writing books together. We also had a session with author, Matt Brown, where we were inspired to make characters from everyday objects. At the end of the day, we did a whole class Kahoot about WBD, which got very competitive!
CAFOD
Year 6 really enjoyed their session with CAFOD where they were learning about how they could live simply, which ties in with our virtue of Simplicity. We had to discuss different projects that CAFOD could fund in El Salvador that would have the most impact. Linking with Pope Leo XIV’s quote, “It is better to do something than nothing,” a lot of the children chose to fund a health centre or sustainable farming with their budget as it would help the most people.
Seasonal Soup
Year 6 had a great time making their final product – a delicious vegetable soup. We used our peeling and cutting skills to prepare a variety of vegetables; these were then mixed with a few other ingredients and blended together. Everyone enjoyed the soup and gave it a big thumbs up!
Class Worship
Year 6 did a wonderful job of planning and taking part in a Class Worship session for our STA Feast Day. Each group had to plan their Gather, Listen, Respond, Prayer and Sent Forth and different groups were asked to share this with everyone. It was done in a prayerful and thoughtful manner and the children’s responses were very insightful.
Yellowstone National Park
In our Geography lesson, we have been learning about the physical geography of Yellowstone National Park in the USA. We researched the area and then made a poster with our partner including information such as: climate, population density and physical features.
Chopping and Peeling
In our DT lesson, Year 6 learnt how to chop and peel safely in preparation for making our seasonal soup. We learnt the bridge hold and also the claw grip.
USA Map
In our first Geography lesson, we had a great time putting together the state map of the USA. We were then challenged to find different places on the map like Yellowstone National Park and New York – places we will be studying this topic.
Yeast Needs
In our Science lessons we have been learning about the different types of micro-organisms and today we carried out a comparative test to find out what yeast needs to grow. We thought about what variables to change and keep the same and had fun watching the foam grow!
RE Vocabulary
Year 6 have been working hard in their RE lessons to learn lots of new vocabulary relating to our topic of Prophecy and Promise. We have been learning about Mary as the Mother of God. In our RE lesson, we created a card game to help us remember some of the new vocabulary and we had a lot of fun playing with our partners.
Micro-organisms Posters
Year 6 had a great Science lesson investigating different types of micro-organisms. With their partners, they created amazing posters to show off their learning. They showed great teamwork and good scientific knowledge!
Identifying Invertebrates
In our Science topic of Living Things, we have been learning about classification. Today, we looked at Linnaean Classification and used this to identify different invertebrates outside. We found lots of different arthropods, molluscs and annelid worms!
Animal Classification
In our new topic, our first lesson was all about how different animals are classified. We looked at observable characteristics for different animals. Using these, we then created our branching database to classify the animals we had been given.
Class Worship with Reception
To end our Creation and Covenant topic in RE, Year 6 met with their Reading Buddies from Reception for a time of Class Worship. We began with a prayer and then Reception shared their RE books with Year 6 to show them what they had been learning about. We finished with a prayer to thank God for Creation and a song that celebrates the wonders of Creation.
Logical Thinking
We had to apply our problem-solving and logical thinking skills to our maths lesson. We had a puzzle to put back together – it was a multiplication grid but it did not look like one at the beginning!
Alarm System
For our final product in DT, we had to make our car using a net and then using our knowledge of circuits, design and create an alarm system if someone was to open the car door. We really enjoyed applying our science knowledge to this project and it also taught us to be resilient and problem-solve when what we wanted to do did not go according to our original plan!
Laudato Si
In our RE lesson, we began to think about the human impact on the world as a result of sin damaging our relationship with the earth. We read a section of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si and discussed the four main problems that it teaches about. We then had to rank and explain which we thought were the most and least serious problems.
Pilgrims of Hope Pledge Day
We had a great day celebrating our Pilgrims of Hope Pledge Day. We did a CAFOD workshop where we learnt more about CST and the lives of different people around the world. Together, we went on a prayer walk and considered how we can bring hope to those around us. Then as a class, we made our pledge and promised to stand in solidarity with others and be a people of hope.
Empower and Challenge Workshop
This morning, we had an interesting session run by Hazard Alley called the Empower and Challenge workshop. We learnt about gender stereotypes and harassment and discussed what it means to give consent. We know it is everybody’s responsibility to challenge behaviour that should not be happening and we learnt how to keep ourselves safe.
Circuits
Our Science topic is Circuits and today, we needed to complete different circuit challenges. We learnt what a simple circuit was and had to add different components to achieve the challenge. They included making a buzzer sound and making a motor spin, using any equipment that we wanted to.
