Year 5
Earth Day Worship
As we celebrated Earth Day around the world today, we decided to take our class worship outside to see all the wonderful gifts that God has given us. Year 5 engaged superbly with our guided meditation, as we joined Jesus in a beautiful garden, just like the lovely grounds in our school.
Once we came back together, the children went off around the field to find something beautiful that they had never noticed before and give thanks to God for that special gift.
Passion Assembly
Today, Year 5 performed their class assembly: Our Lord’s Passion. “You proclaimed the scripture with meaning and emotion. You spoke so well and sang beautifully which added so much to the re-telling of the most familiar and powerful story of our faith.” – Mrs Hackett.
Well done Year 5!
Stations Of The Cross
As part of our Lenten promise to pray more, Year 5 took part in a Stations of the Cross ‘prayer chain’ with many of the other Catholic schools in Milton Keynes. Each school was given two stations to read out and say a prayer for. Our volunteers read beautifully and the whole class demonstrated exceptional stillness and reflection.
Lenten Promises
In our class worship today, Year 5 made their Lenten promises to God. We discussed how during Lent, Catholics try to fast, pray and give more as we begin to reconnect with Jesus and grow closer to him. We listened to the gospel reading of Jesus’ temptation in the desert, thought about what it means for us today and then the children wrote down their own personal promises to Jesus.
Fire Safety
Today, Year 5 were incredibly lucky to be visited by one of the Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service teams based at West Ashland Fire Station. The firefighters led the children in an informative workshop to discuss important elements of fire safety at home and in the wider world as well as learning more about the roles of a firefighter in Milton Keynes.
The children were then led outside to learn about the fire engine itself and even had a go at holding some of the heavy equipment and firing the water hoses!
It was a lot of fun! Year 5 listened brilliantly and asked some fantastic questions.
King David
In RE this half term, Year 5 have been learning more about King David and what an important role he played as an ancestor of Jesus Christ. We have heard lots about how unique David was in comparison to the other kings of Israel before him, both in his actions and his prayer. In this lesson we staged an interview with King David to explore further what made him so special.
Artefact Discovery
In our history lessons, we have been learning about the discovery of artefacts, by historians in the last 150 years, and what these findings have been able to teach us about the Ancient Egyptians. We had our own turn at uncovering some hidden artefacts in class. In pairs, we had to carefully reveal the pieces of the artefact, piece them together and then give our opinion of what they are, what they were used for and who they may have belonged to. It was a lot of fun!
Stillness and Silence
Year 5 took part in a ‘Stillness and Silence’ worship activity. The children were encouraged to reflect on an image of Jesus and try to listen to what the picture was saying to them. It was wonderful to see the children really engaged with their faith and thinking deeply about the meanings behind the image.
