Year 6D

Arrest Hotseat

In our RE lessons, we have been exploring the key moments that led to Jesus’ crucifixion. This lesson was focussed on Jesus’ arrest at the Garden of Gethsemane. We read the scripture as a class and worked with our partner to pick out key verses that stood out to us.

Then we asked for some volunteers to take part in a ‘hot seat’ activity. The volunteers had to put themselves in the shoes of one of the soldiers who was present at the arrest. The rest of the children then asked questions to the ‘soldiers’ to get their perception of what happened. It was a lot of fun and the answers from our volunteers were incredibly well thought out.

Gymnastics

As part of our gymnastics topic, we have used apparatus while demonstrating our skills of jumping, such as tuck, straight, straddle and pike. We have shown good teamwork and perseverance to improve our gymnastic skills.

World Book Day 2025

We started the day with a great assembly and thoroughly enjoyed looking at everyone’s costumes. We completed lots of quizzes, such as the STA Masked Reader and we played the online Footy and Booky Quiz 2025.

We spent some time creating book covers of the characters we have dressed up as and enjoyed our time with our Year 1 Reading Buddies, creating monster origami bookmarks.

It was a great day!

Gymnastics

In their PE lessons this half term, 6D’s topic is gymnastics. We have been practising showing good body tension and applied this skill when performing some group balances. This was doubly difficult as we had to show good teamwork and communication in addition to body tension.

Vegetable Soup

This half term, we have been learning about seasonal vegetables that grow in the USA. Today, the children came together to prepare a wonderful winter vegetable soup. They chopped onions, peeled carrots and prepared potatoes and celery.  The finished product was absolutely delicious and we very much enjoyed tasting it in the afternoon!

Micro:bit Hot Potato

In school this year, we have been exploring the potential of the micro:bit computers both in Coding Club and in our class lessons. Today, we had a bit of fun with them by turning them into a game of hot potato.

The children coded the micro:bits so that when a button was pressed, they counted down from a random number from 1-15 and once it hit zero, a symbol would pop up, a sound would play and the person with the mico:bit in their hand lost that round. It was great fun.

Epiphany

In RE today, we were celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany. We spoke about what the word ‘Epiphany’ means and how it was the first time that the wise men truly understood their faith.

We split into different groups to complete some related activities. One group got the laptops out to carry out some research on the meaning behind the gifts the wise men brought.

Another group completed a comparison between Luke’s and Matthew’s Gospels, and how they both tell the story of the Epiphany differently.

The final group prepared a short drama sequence, to retell the story of the wise men and their journey to the baby Jesus.

Micro:Bits

Year 6D have been exploring the potential of the micro:bit mini computers this half term. The micro:bits are able to measure sound, light, temperature and much more. In groups, the children travelled around different locations in school to take different readings and compare results. Surprisingly, the teachers’ staff room was one of the quietest spots!

No Pens' Day

On No Pens’ Day, Year 6D learned some Makaton signs and had a go at creating their own. Thousands of children in the UK rely on Makaton signs as a form of communication so we wanted to learn more about these signs on a day that is all about speaking and listening skills.

Judaism Week

We were very lucky to have Mrs Elijah visit our school to celebrate Judaism Week. Mrs Elijah very kindly held a question-and-answer session for the children to take part in. We discussed Kosher foods and the differences between orthodox and reform Jews.

Our Lady of Fatima

Across school we have been learning more about Our Lady of Fatima and the story behind Mary’s appearance to the young children. As part of our class worship, the pupils of 6D led us on a meditation walk around the path. At each station, a part of the story was read out and the children reflected on the station and prayed.

Micro-organisms

This week we have been looking at micro-organisms and understanding that there are three main types: bacteria, fungi and viruses. We created a poster, defining these words, explaining where they could be found and providing examples of them being helpful or harmful.

Judaism Week

We were very lucky to have Mrs Elijah visit us, partaking in a Q & A session where we asked lots of interesting questions. We have spent time learning about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Here are some of our pieces of work on Yom Kippur.

Young Shakespeare Company – Twelfth Night Performance

Year 6 took part in a brilliant interactive performance of Twelfth Night today. Through helping to build the atmosphere, making predications about the plot and thinking deeply about the feelings and motivations of the characters, they have gained a good understanding of Shakespeare’s play. They are now looking forward to applying this learning in their History and English lessons later in the half term.

Classifying Invertebrates

Today, we used the Linnaean system – created by Carl Linnaeus - to classify living things. This is a hierarchy and living things are classified based on observable characteristics. We used a classification key to classify the invertebrates we found.

Classification

Year 6 have started their new Science topic – Living Things. We learnt about how living things can be classified (put into groups) based on what they look like. We were given a selection of animals and sorted them into groups and then created a branching database.

October, Month of the Holy Rosary

We worked collaboratively in pairs to create posters which could be used to help other children pray the Rosary. Each pair focused on one of the Mysteries of Light – writing down the story, illustrating and posing reflection questions to aid someone who wished to pray the Rosary and consider each Mystery.

Making Simple Circuits

Year 6 have been creating simple series circuits by experimenting how to make a bulb light, how to make a motor spin and a buzzer make a sound. We also looked at adding more than one bulb and only using one cell.
