Year 4

Gladiators Themed Dance

Year 4 have performed their final gladiators themed dance to the track ‘Warriors’ by Imagine Dragons. We worked very well within our groups, holding attack and defence poses as well as agreeing on some poses as a group. Miss Harrison was very impressed! Ask us to show you all our gladiator inspired moves at home.

What Would Jesus Do?

Today in RE, we focused our discussions on the following question- What Would Jesus Do? We discussed any groups or people who may have experienced exclusion, similarly to the people with leprosy during Jesus’ time. We discussed how it feels to be excluded and thought of some examples of when this had happened to us. We watched a video, showing some examples of what Jesus would do. We then focused our discussion on one piece of artwork, representing Jesus shining his light and love through another person. Finally, we created our own version of this piece of art, showing how we felt Jesus shines his love and light on everyone.

Pop Art

This half term, Year 4 have learnt about the artist Andy Warhol. We looked at some examples of his work and discovered what ‘Pop art’ is. We then produced our final piece of art inspired by Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell soup piece.

Feast Day

Year 4 enjoyed celebrating St Thomas Aquinas during our Feast Day. We listened to some information about our saint and discussed with a partner some adjectives to describe him. We then wrote our own acrostic poems, describing who he was as a person. We then planned our own class worship and enjoyed a delicious cake and some juice before we went home. We prayed for St Thomas Aquinas and discussed how he is a good role model for us

Jesus, the Messiah

Today in RE, our focus was learning about the signs that Jesus is the Messiah. We spoke about how John the Baptist was arrested by King Herod and put in a prison cell for speaking out about the way King Herod was ruling the Jewish people. We discussed that John could not speak to his followers, so sent them to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. We then read some scripture from Matthew, where Jesus healed the leper, cured the blind, helped a mute speak and woke a girl up. We then worked in pairs to try ‘hot seating’, where we took on the role of an interviewer or the person who had been healed. This gave us some time to discuss how the people were feeling and allowed us to share our opinions on who Jesus really is. We then wrote a letter to John the Baptist, telling him what we had learned and what we believed.

Sound Investigation

Year 4 set up an investigation in our topic of sound. We were exploring the effects of distance on the volume of sound. We chose an instrument and used an iPad to measure the decibels. We used a metre stick to measure the distance and then we looked at our results to find out what had happened. Ask us what we found out!

Christmas Party

Year 4 enjoyed Christmas party day. We all made our own Christmas hats and spent lots of time on them. We then played some games, including musical statues before enjoying our Christmas lunch.

Christmas Cracked

Year 4 enjoyed our Christmas Cracked session at St Andrew’s church with Carol. We played some games, the first where two teams had to hold up a picture to match the description given to describe the true meaning of Christmas. We then played a game of Christmas charades. Then, we had a workbook to complete where we had to read some storyboards around the room to help find the answers.  We learnt lots and enjoyed listening to Carol, helping us understand the true meaning of Christmas

Hello Bletchley Workshop

Year 4 were lucky to have some visitors come in and run a workshop today. The workshop was focused on a local project called Hello Bletchley, which is going to be viewed in Bletchley. The project is focused on Alan Turing and will include a sculpture of him due to him being an important person who lived in Bletchley. Some of us got to use an AI machine, answering some questions about ourselves which will become a part of the sculpture of Alan Turing. We were given a unique code so that we can see our contributions to this sculpture. We then had to select five different materials to make into a sculpture of our own. We were very impressed with each other’s work!

No Pens’ Day

Year 4 enjoyed their No Pens’ Day!  First, we met with our reading buddies in Year 2 and shared a book together. We then went into the hall where our four chosen children took part in their debates. They all did really well and spoke very clearly about their arguments. Then in DT, we evaluated a range of cakes for our topic this term. We discussed the traffic light labels on food packaging first, so we understood how to make healthy choices. Then, we used our senses to taste the cakes, deciding on which we liked and why, focusing on the taste and texture of the cakes

Gladiator Dance

This week, we started our dance unit, Gladiator dance. We discussed what a gladiator was and what their job was. We then explored a piece of music, moving our bodies in time to the music. We then focused on some gladiator moves, holding our position when the music stopped. We then listened to our main performance piece, ‘Warriors’ by Imagine Dragons. We decided on our gladiator pose, beginning the song with a freeze frame of our gladiator poses.

Teeth

This week, we have learnt about the four different types of teeth and their functions. We spent some time looking at our partner’s teeth, noticing the different sizes and shapes of the teeth. We then learnt about each type and found those teeth in our own mouths.  We discussed the role of each type of teeth and talked about what happens when we chew our food, as well as what happens if we do not look after our teeth

Bletchley Park

Year 4 enjoyed their trip to Bletchley Park. We had a guided tour where some of us had to act out roles from WWII. We looked at a morse code device and even had a go at using it! We then spent some time exploring the huts in the park. We then went inside for our ‘Codes and Ciphers’ session where we learnt more about the coding during the war. We worked in small groups to decipher some different codes. We were then shown a real Enigma machine. We were fascinated to learn how this machine works! We then all got to have a turn at pressing one of the keys on the machine. We finished off our day exploring the different rooms in the Mansion before heading back to school.

Discursive Texts

This week, we have been learning about discursive texts, preparing us for our debate. Today, we generated our own arguments for and against the motion ‘can children make a big difference to the environment?’  We looked at the features of a discursive text and discussed how to ensure our arguments were non biased. We worked with a partner to come up with some arguments for both sides

Computing

This term, Year 4 have been learning all about the World Wide Web. We have learnt what a website is and have explored how the internet works. We looked at common features of different types of websites, such as logos, pictures and text. We then focused our learning on how we can create content on the World Wide Web. We used Chrome Music Lab to create our own musical content.

Hockey Skills

We have been practising our hockey skills this term in Year 4. We have learnt how to dribble the ball, how to push pass the ball to a partner and how to hit the ball at a distance. Working well with a partner, we have also learnt how to hit the ball to a target.

Stillness and Silence

This week, Year 4 practised some stillness and silence together. We focused our thoughts on our new virtue of thankfulness, thinking about what we are thankful for and how we can show gratitude towards others. We thought about how we are thankful for God, guiding us through each day. We are also thankful for Jesus’ sacrifice to save us!

Classifying Invertebrates

Today, Year 4 learnt about how we can classify invertebrates. We learnt about the five groups and discussed some examples of each.  Then we used a classification key to help us find some invertebrates in our playground.

Reading Buddies

We spent some time with our Year 4 reading buddies during our Pilgrims of Hope Pledge Day. We spent some time doing some shared colouring, thinking about our jubilee pledge as Pilgrims of Hope.

Classification

In science, Y4 have been learning all about living things. We learnt how to classify animals by their characteristics. First, we decided on different ways of classifying ourselves. We grouped ourselves by whether we wear glasses, how old we are, whether we have siblings and by hair length. We then thought of different ways to classify animals.

Diary Entries

Year 4 have been focusing on diary entries in English. We read ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker and wrote our own diaries based on the book. Miss Harrison was very impressed with our writing!
